On February 1, 2003, the Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated in the skies over Texas and came to rest in Sabine County. Hundreds of volunteers undertook the difficult task of recovering Columbia and her Crew.

This monument serves as a reminder to the World of the sacrifices made by the volunteers, especially Charles Krenek & Jules "Buzz" Mier, Jr. who on March 27, 2003, gave their lives in their efforts to help recover the Columbia and her Crew.
