Deshler's Brigade

—Cleburne's Division —

Douglas' Texas Battery.
2 6 pounders, 2 12 pound howitzers.
Deshler's Brigade, Cleburne's Division, Hill's Corps.
September 20, 1863.

Captain James P. Douglas, Commanding.
1st Lieutenant John H. Brigham.
1st Lieutenant Benjamin Hardin.
2d Lieutenant M.S. Fleisher.
2d Lieutenant w.J. Sanders.

The Battery was not engaged on the 19th or morning of the 20th, though under fire and in position several times for action. By order of General Cleburne it remained in reserve till about 4 o'clock p.m. when with Polk's and Wood's Brigades and Semple's Battery it advanced to a position within 300 yards of the enemy's rail and log barricades and opened on them with shell. After firing twenty minutes the enemy began to yield ground. General Cleburne then ordered the battery to cease firing and moved the pieces to the front, coming into position on this spot in support of Polk's Brigade. By direction of General Polk the Battery opened on the enemy's works firing a few rounds, when one piece was moved to the top of the ridge with the infantry and opened fire.

The Captain pushed forward with one piece to the Chattanooga road when he was ordered to halt. The remaining pieces were brought up and all bivouacked for the night. Casualties: 1 man wounded; 2
horses killed; 1 carriage disabled.
