In Memoriam

Harold Geddes was a local landmark. Small in stature, he stood tall in this community.
Orphaned in the Halifax Explosion of 1917, he was adopted by Charles and Alice Geddes of Sackville.
On retirement from his job as a custodian at Mount Allison University, Harold became the community's volunteer caretaker. For more than 20 years he kept the town centre litter-free.
When work was done, he would sit at a local café, sipping hot tea and reading the daily papers. A keen, if crusty, observer of current events, he was seldom at a loss for a timely quip or comment.
Harold's devotion to civic tidiness earned him Sackville's Good Neighbour Award and, in 2000, the Mayor's Award for his 'pride, initiative, and interest in keeping Sackville neat and clean on a totally voluntary basis.'
Harold Geddes died on September 8, 2004. The streets of downtown Sackville will never seem quite the same. As one friend put it, 'He may not have had big feet, but he left awfully big shoes to fill.'
