One of three original counties formed when Kentucky Co.,Virginia, was divided by Va. Act in 1780. Other 2 counties were Lincoln and Fayette. Jefferson included 19 present-day counties; parts of 11 others. By 1811 reduced to present noundaries. Named for Thomas Jefferson, then governor of Va.;author Declaration of Independence; third U.S. President, 1801-1809.
