The Army Medical Department that served in France was the best equipped and trained Medical Department up to that time. Trained enlisted aid men were attached to each company in a division and provided immediate care and evacuated the wounded to an aid station. From these stations the wounded were shipped to hospitals in the rear. Medical innovations such as surgery performed under antiseptic conditions, x-ray of wounds, patient to patient blood transfusions, and vaccination against tetanus dramatically improved a Soldier's chance of recovery. In fact 93% of Soldiers who were wounded and received care survived.

Our men lay in Shell-holes scattered over the entire are of advance... The medical men accompanied the assault waves and worked every minute administering first aid and getting the seriously wounded to the rear... The triage hospitals had received that day ten officers and 493 men... There was a far larger number of slightly wounded who refused to quit their posts.
