The final result is an enormous base which supports and enhances several very large structures. The base of the architectural group has a quadrangular plan with each side measuring 160m. and having an average heighth of 8 m. above the level of the plaza.
The term acropolis, employed in Greek architecture to designate an elevated or high city, here refers only to a series of enormous structures, erected upon a large base, without implying any kind of a relationship between the Maya and Greek cultures. The concentration of buildings to the east of the main plaza is due to the fact that the ancient Maya gave great importance to that cardinal point as that is where the sun, the benevolent deity of the Mesoamerican pantheon, is reborn daily. The orientation of the buildings in respect to the cardinal points is common throughout all the ancient cities of Mexico and is due to the use of urban space as well as the religious beliefs of the period.
