Text on the Front Side, Middle, of the Monument:

The 52nd Regiment,
Major James T. Holmes, Commanding,
moved from near Rossville with
the Brigade September 18th, 1863,
at 3:00 p.m., reached this position at
dark and bivouacked here for the
night. On the 19th, at 7:00 a.m. after
slight skirmishing, the Regiment
was ordered with the Brigade to
Rossville, and on the 20th moved to
the front with the Brigade and
took a position to the west of the
LaFayette Road, near the Cloud
House and engaged the enemy, remain-
ing there until withdrawn late in
the evening.
