Located on the bank immediately to
the north was the C.S.A. Naval Yard. The
facility which built the ironclad
Ram "Muscogee" and renovated the
gunboat "Chattachoochee." Sunk in the
river in 1865, these boats were
salvaged during the 1960s and are now
preserved in the James W. Woodruff, Jr.,
Confederate Naval Museum. The
Columbus Iron Works, which was
operated by the C.S.A. Navy, produced
boilers and steam engines which
powered these boats.
