Enlisted infantrymen found that privacy was not a feature of barracks life. Privates and corporals bunked together in the main room; sergeants occupied small adjoining rooms.

Each soldier stored his military gear and personal belongings on a wooden shelf above his cot and in a wooden locker at its foot. At reveille, the men rolled up their bed sacks on the cots' wooden slats. They stacked their rifles in a special circular rack in the center of the room.

Fireplaces heated the building until replaced with cast iron stoves. Kerosene lamps or candles, hung at each end of the room, provided the only light.

Foundations of the kitchen and mess hall are behind the barracks.
