This Brigade, forming the right echelon of Palmer's Division advanced from the LaFayette Road in the vicinity of the Poe house, and came into action on this ground about 12:30 P.M. It first encountered the left of Cheatham's Division, and was subsequently attacked in succession by the Brigades of Stewart's Division. About 3:30 P.M. Bates Brigade of that Division attacked and finally forced Grose's Brigade to the rear, toward the north end of the Poe field where it was rallied in support of several batteries. Bate's Brigade followed until its three right regiments came within close range of these batteries, which were posted diagonally across the LaFayette Road. Bate was repulsed with heavy loss and the fighting on this part
of the field ceased soon after 5 o'clock.
