The Dakotas became a part of the United States as a result of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Fur traders moved into the area following the Lewis and Clark expedition in 1804. The state was formed from the 1861 Dakota Territory, which grew in population with the discovery of gold in the Black Hills in 1874.
1743-Explored by the Verendrye brothers for France 1817-Permanently settled by fur traders 1889-Admitted to the Union as the 40th state.
