Claimed by France in 1682, the area was ceded to Spain in 1763, reverted back to France in 1800, and in 1803 became part of the Louisiana Purchase. In 1817 it became part of the unorganized Indian Territory. A battleground for pro and anti-slavery groups, the state was formed from the Kansas Territory, organized in 1854 as part of the Kansas-Nebraska Act. Kansas entered the Union as a free-soil state.

1541-Explored by Francisco Vasquez de Coronado for Spain 1827-Permanently settled by outposts along the Santa Fe and Oregon Trails 1861-Admitted to the Union as the 34th state.
