This Brigade formed early as the reserve of Palmer's Division. About 9 a.m. Colonel Grose was ordered to leave the 23rd Kentucky with General Hazen and proceed with the rest of the Brigade to the left to assist General Baird. The latter was reached just as the Confederates attacked, and the Brigade at once became severely engaged and was twice repulsed, but in the assault with other assistance it drove back the Confederates and held its lines. About 2 p.m. it resumed its place on the lines of its own Division. About 5 o'clock the Brigade retired, under orders, receiving a heavy artillery fire as it crossed the Kelly field. It reformed west
of the field and proceeded with the army to Rossville.
Strength in action, September 19th, officers and men 1685. Casualties: killed 53; wounded 399; captured or missing 65; total 517.
Percentage of loss 30.7.
