(1816 - 1897)
commander of Fort Fred Steele from October, 1871 until September, 1873; was born an aristocrat in Tours, France, but came to America as a soldier of fortune to fight in the Civil War. Commissioned as Colonel in 31st Infantry, he commanded Fort Stevenson on the Upper Missouri until taking charge of Fort Fred Steele.
