1900

English translation:
In 1899, leading Art Nouveau architect, Hector Guimard, was selected to design the subway access stations in Paris.

But in 1900, when the subway stations opened, the decorative entrances shocked Parisians. The spelling "Métropolitain" lacked readability, they claimed, and the tulip masts used to light the access at night were monstrous.

In 1902, future subway station designs were awarded to lesser known architects. By 1913, Guimard's designs were no longer being installed and, during station renovation work in the 1960s, many of them were removed and replaced with modern structures.

At the end of the 20th century, new molds were made to restore Guimard's designs as historical monuments to his work.
