(The Guadalupe House)

Like 208 South Presa, which it resembles. this house was probably built shortly after 1869 on land purchased by Ernest Hessler from Juana Francisca Montes de Flores. The structure, which appears on the 1873 city map, was rented when Louis Foutrel bought it in 1891, and continued to be used as rental property until the City acquired it in l940.

Both this and the adjacent house reflect building styles of the post—Civil War War era in San Antonio, when simple, well-proportioned houses began to replace earlier adobe structures and the rude houses typical of a frontier settlement. The houses have different floor plans, although they both have three-bay front porches.

A shrine to the Virgin of Guadalupe was built as a part of the NYA era wall on the north side of the house. Shrines built to venerate a cherished saint were common features of Hispanic homes. The house and walkway leading to it take their present names from the shrine.
