The Historic City of Burlington-Transportation
At first the Delaware River carried people and goods to and from the City of Burlington. Farm goods and raw materials were transported by horse-drawn wagons on coarse roads to the busy markets and wharves at the foot of High Street.
Finished products imported from Philadelphia and beyond were off-loaded here for the early residents of Burlington County. As industry grew, networks of trains and highways developed to serve large market, and to export Burlington's growing manufacturing output.
(Inscription under the photos on the left) Steamboats carried residents and visitors to and from Philadelphia and beyond. —-As industry grew so did the network of rail lines.—-Steamboats were once a common site along the Delaware River.
