After the English gained control of the Hudson Valley from the Dutch in 1674, they established a strong presence in the town they renamed Albany. Soldiers headquartered at Fort Frederick just above this intersection. They formed a masonic lodge in 1737 and families attended St. Peter;s Church, organized in 1712.

By 1800, the distinctions had blurred between this British neighborhood and the center of Dutch society at the foot of State Street. St. Peter;s Church across the street, the present lodge building at corner to your right, and the old streetplan are venerable reminders of a colonial past.
