Erected in 1886 as the post's first permanent hospital this building provided seventy beds for the sick and wounded. Removing the casualties from the unhealthy riverside location of the temporary hospital in the city, which was a proven spawning ground for devastating cholera epidemics.



Throughout the years this building had served as officers' apartments, post dental clinic and troop barracks. It was refitted as quarters for visiting dignitaries and designated Sam Houston House on May 25, 1961, honoring the legendary Texas hero who was Commander-in-Chief of the Army of the Republic of Texas, President of the Republic of Texas and Governor of the State of Texas.
