Hermon Methodist Church was established in c.1870 in Appomattox County, Virginia. The church was named for the biblical Mount Hermon. It was located east of Route 24 on what is now property of the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park. A graveyard visible from the highway indicates the old church site.In 1900 Hermon Methodist Church was dismantled and rebuilt near the foot of Piney Mountain, east of Oakville in Appomattox County. Mr. W.H.S. Barlow and his wife Florence Hamilton Barlow donated two acres of land for the church. Here families gathered—as many as four generations at once—to worship and support each other through the passages of life.

Like many rural churches in the 20th century, Hermon Methodist closed because of declining membership in 1969. With great pride in their past and generosity of spirit, the Hermon trustees authorized disassembly of the church in 2004 for use in the construction of the Cemetery's Bicentennial Chapel. Today old Hermon Church lives on in the Old City Cemetery.
