Huntsville Madison County Veterans MemorialFollowing Iraq's invasion of its neighbor Kuwait on 2 August 1990, the United States rushed troops to the Middle East to defend Saudi Arabia and liberate Kuwait. After a build-up of forces, and the expiration of a UN Mandated ordering Iraq to leave Kuwait, the war began on 17 January 1991, with a heavy aerial bombardment.
