Inscription
Greenwood was founded Sept. 30, 1823. The original land owners, who were descendants of Dutch immigrants, came from Mercer County, Kentucky. A log cabin was built on or near this site by John B. and Jane Brewer Smock. The first church (Presbyterian) was organized in this cabin Dec. 31, 1825, by Rev. Isaac Reed. The nine original members were: Garrett Brewer, John B. Smock, Isaac and Rachel Demaree Smock, James and Charity Brewer Smock, Henry and Mary Smock and Mary DeMotte Smock.
