Capt. William J. Pegram

Part of A.P. Hill's Division, Pegram's battery left Harpers Ferry the morning of the battle. The Virginians crossed the Potomac River and took position here about 4:00. Pegram's guns fired into the flank of the Union 9th Corps and helped drive Burnside's men back. Pegram's brother-in-law, Capt. David McIntosh, commanded a Confederate battery that fought just 400 yards north of here.
