Rev. John stough and family settled at Mount Carmel about 1787, and about 1790 Stough started the first gristmill. The first church was the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church orginized between 1792 and 1796.

The upper Devonian or lower Mississippian strata and the "Gantz" or "Berea Sand" of the driller, is a clean pebbly sandstone. It produces oil and natural gas at depths greater than 1700 feet in north central West Virginia.

Built by Henry Grimes circa 1825. It was opened as a tavern in 1841 and kept by George G. Houser, Hiram Hanshaw and William H. Grimes. This was the first tavern in Union District on the Northwestern Turnpike.
