In February 1942, twenty-four B-25bomber crews of the 17th BombardmentGroup at Columbia Army Air Basevolunteered to take part in a secretproject headed by Lt. Col. James H.Doolittle. This group was the nucleusof the Doolittle Raiders who, takingoff from the aircraft carrier "Hornet," bombedTokyo on April 18, 1942.
