"Stonewall" Jackson's way here was a woodland road west of and parallel to the Brock Road. This park trail approximates the old appearance. No tar, asphalt, or cement highway existed in the 1860's. Even the best of that time, the stone turnpikes and plank roads, were inferior to present day gravel roads maintained by modern machinery. The trench remains here are part of the Federal line in the Wilderness operations of May 1864, a year after Jackson's march.
