Battle of Spanish Fort

On the evening of April 8th, 1865, while the Confederate fortifications were being shelled by Union artillery, the 8th Iowa Infantry advanced from near this point to the Confederate left and captured a part of the works, in hand to hand fighting. General Gibson ordered a counter attack but was unable to restore his line against heavy Union reinforcements. He was able to save most of his garrison by withdrawing down a foot bridge to Battery Tracy, on Blakely River, then to Mobile.
