Overall Record: 8-4 | SEC Record: 6-1Head Coach Mike ArcherThe Tigers looked like champions early by thrashing Texas A&M then taking LSU's first win ever in Knoxville with a rout of Tennessee. After setbacks in road games at Ohio State and Florida, the Tigers rebounded in earth-shaking form. Tommy Hodson hit Eddie Fuller for winning TD vs. Auburn with less than a minute to play, causing a tremor that registered on a seismograph in the LSU Geology Department in what will forever be known as the "Earthquake Game". Tough home victories over Kentucky and Ole Miss followed, and then LSU overcame a 15-0 Alabama lead for a 19-18 victory on a David Browndyke field goal in the waning seconds. The Tigers clinched the SEC title the following week with a win at Mississippi State.
