E. Branson Cowgill established the city's first newspaper, the Rice County Gazette, at this location in 1876. J. E. Junkin combined the Gazette and Bulletin in 1891. The Gazette name was dropped and the classic tin front added in 1899. The Sterling Kansas Bulletin, "The Old Home Paper", continued at this site until 1996.
