This park was named for its principle benefactor, Daniel Kent Tenney (1834 - 1915), an attorney, who purchased a portion of this marshland in 1899 and donated it to the Madison Park and Pleasure Drive Association to be developed and maintained as an "in-city" park for working people. He gave additional funds for park improvements. The acquisition of Tenney Park triggered a new era of park philanthropy and development, and by 1910 the original 14-acre parcel had grown to 44 acres.
