On this site in 1861 the men of Bethel
Community trained before entering the
War Between the States. Known as the
Jeff Davis Guard, they became Company F
of General Wade Hampton's Legion and
fought with distinction in many battles
including the First Battle of Manassas
(Bull Run). The Bethel church grounds
were used for reunions by Southern War
veterans until 1934.
