For pro?tec?tion against the Indians, the set?tlers built a log pal?isade across the nar?rows of the peninula between the York and James rivers. This was about 1633. Middle Plantation (later Williamsburg) began as a set?tle?ment along this pal?isade which had its south?ern anchor where Paper Mill and College creeks join a half mile downstream.
