Here the Kentucky Road, from Cumberland Gap to the Carolinas, crossed the Stage Road, from Abingdon, Va., to the west. In 1790, Jesse Cheek had a store about 50 yds. N.E. On this spot the Deaderick family operated a store with various partners in 1802. James Deaderick closed it to study law in 1844, later becoming chief justice of the Tennessee Supreme Court.
