A decisive battle in the Civil War tookplace here on Nov. 7, 1861, when 18Union warships with about 55 supportingcraft led by Adm. S.E. DuPont bombardedfor 4½ hours the Confederate forcesin Fort Walker on this shore and FortBeauregard on the opposite point.About 13,000 troops under Gen. ThomasW. Sherman then landed on this beachto establish the main Union blockadebase on the South Atlantic coast.
