In wartime the moat was filled with water from the South Channel of the SavannahRiver. This feeder canal featured stop-lockgates which provided water control andaccess to small barges bringing supplies tothe fort. When filled from this ditch, themoat formed an effective barrier to hinderthe approach of infantry.
