Grose's Brigade

—Palmer's Division —

Battery H, 4th U. S. Artillery.
4 12 Pounder Howitzers.
Grose's Brigade, Palmer's Division, Crittenden's Corps.
September 20, 1863.
1st Lieutenant Harry C. Cushing, Commanding.

Early in the morning the Battery re-supplied ammunition and remained in rear of Grose's Brigade in reserve. As soon as the fighting began the Brigade was ordered to re-enforce the left. Hardly had the Brigade reached the ground when the left was pushed back. One section of the battery was placed on this ground, commanding the road. The enemy had gained possession of the road and as soon as the Battery opened on him at about 350 yards with case shot he left it, but opened a full battery of 12 pounder guns on this position. His fire was rapid and effective. The Battery having exhausted its ammunition, retired to refill its chests. Having accomplished this, the Battery was ordered to join the artillery massed on the hill in the rear of the center, west of the Dyer Field. From this position, owing to the rapid advance and heavy fire of the enemy, by which all the horses of the right piece were disabled, it was obligated to retire, losing one gun. It encamped for the night at Rossville. Casualties of the day: 1 man killed; 4 wounded. Casualties of the battle: enlisted men killed 5; officers

wounded 1; men wounded 16; horses killed 19; wounded 6; 1 gun and limber abandoned.
