Manigault's Brigade — Brigadier Arthur M. Manigault.


Anderson's Brigade of this Division reached General Bushrod Johnson's position near Vittetoe's in time to take part on Johnson's right in the assault on Snodgrass Hill made at 2 p.m. Deas and Manigault soon after joined Johnson, and were formed on his left, Deas first occupying the ridge west of Vittetoe's and south of the gorge near that house. Deas thence wheeled to the right and moved against Snodgrass Hill, with Manigault on his right opposite the gorge in that hill. Anderson's Brigade remained on the right of Johnson's Division. The three Brigades of Hindman's Division participated with Johnson's and McLaw's Divisions in the persistent but unsuccessful assault on Snodgrass Hill made about 3 p.m. This attack was renewed after 4 p.m., and continued until sunset, when Steedman's Division was withdrawn to the next ridge in the rear, and was followed by these troops to the foot of the slope in front of this second ridge. The total strength of the Division in action was 6,122. The killed, wounded, and missing for September 19th



and 20th were 1,850. Percentage of loss, 30.22.
