Other than maybe Curly Lambeau, the Packers had no more important front man and no bigger booster than Calhoun over their first quarter-century. A gruff and colorful newspaperman who was fond of chewing on the stub of his cigar, Calhoun helped Lambeau found the team in 1919. Calhoun spent 40 years at the Green Bay Press-Gazette, and for most of that time he doubled as the Packers' publicist and secretary, among other duties. In the process, he made many influential friends, especially among big-city newspaper writers, who helped put little Green Bay on the map and build a widespread following for its treasured football team.
