Over 400 years, 112 people were executed on Tower Hill watched by crowds of eager spectators. The last execution was in 1747, when many spectators were injured in the crush to watch the beheading of the Scottish rebel Lord Lovat.
The greatest threat to the royal fortress has always come from the City of London so early Tower authorities gained control of the land beyond the moat, including Tower Hill. The extent of these 'Tower Liberties' has been disputed with the City for centuries. The boundary is still marked by stones today.
