English translation:
The Fortress of Santo DomingoThis walled enclosure and complex of buildings was begun in 1505 under the Governor of Santo Domingo Frey Nicolás de Ovando. The Tower of Tribute (Torre de Homenaje) served as a prison until very recently. The main entrance portal was built in 1787 during the reign of Carlos III, during which time the Fort of Santa Bárbara was also built. This is the oldest military structure in the Americas.
