Faith Arrives
Faith had an early foothold in Vicksburg. The
Catholic faith arrived early with the Spanish explorers
and settlers. Organized religion started around 1812
when Newit Vick, a Methodist minister, arrived. Early
settlers held religious gatherings in homes before the
town was formed and churches built. Other religions
followed as the town grew.

Early Religions Around Vicksburg
Catholicism 1790   ·   Jewish 1820
Methodist 1812   ·   Presbyterians 1826
Baptist 1819   ·   Episcopal 1826

First Presbyterian Church (1910)
As Vicksburg grew so did the number of churches. Ten of the
largest churches were along the Vicksburg trolley route in the
early 1900s.

Holy Trinity Episcopal Church
Construction on the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church started in
1870 and took 20 years to complete. The church's foundation
is 21 feet deep to support the 211 foot tall steeple. The original
windows were clear but were soon replaced by the beautiful
stained glass windows. Contributions for the windows came
from all over the country including from Civil War veterans on
both sides of the battle. Six of these windows were produced
by the world famous Tiffany Glass Company. The set of stained
glass windows in the back wall of the

church are dedicated
to both Confederate and Union soldiers who died during the
Seige of Vicksburg.

The dedication reads:
To the dead who fell in the battle at Vicksburg in the years 1862 and 1863
