Robert Estes Kennington was one of
Jackson's wealthiest merchants in the
early 1900s. In 1912, he chose this hill
north of the city to build "Kenwood," a
grand brick mansion on extensive grounds
including a tennis court, lake, formal
gardens, horse stables, and golf course.
Foundation failures ca. 1930 forced a
disassembly of the home. In 1934, the
original materials were recycled to
build 1020 Carlisle Street, a smaller
version of the original mansion, and
1040 Carlisle Street next door.
