Ponce Inlet Historical Museum

A Cistern is a waterproof receptacle for holding liquids, usually water. Cisterns are often built to catch and store water. They are distinguished from wells from their waterproof linings. Cisterns were used before a water system was used in Ponce Inlet. The water was used for many purposes including cooking, irrigation, and washing.

This cistern was used by The Rest-a-While located next to 143 Beach Street. The cistern was located underneath the bathroom. The Rest-a-While had rooms available for family members to stay in while their men served in the Coast Guard during WW II at the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse.
