Ester Julia Kapiolani, granddaughter of Kaumuali'i, the last King of Kaua'i. Widow of Namakaeha, married King David Kalākaua in 1863 and as a gift he built Kapi'olani Park in Waikīkī in her honor. Deeply concerned about the moribund Hawaiian population, she established a maternity hospital which stands today as Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women & Children.HM Number | HM2348 |
