Antigua Escuela Modelo

Antigua Escuela Modelo

Antigua Escuela Modelo

The "Escuelas Modelo" were an innovative prorosal that included the construction of buildings and their equipment, in such way that they would facilitate the application of the new pedagogical proposals promoted by the Porfiriato. The ideal of "Porfirista" education was based on the uniformity of the positivist learn teaching method. The educational program emphasized that students should learn a skill, in addition to the general program of education, with the objective of making them more skillful and help them to make a living in the future. The subjects that formed the general program of education were: Moral and civic instruction, National language,
Lessons of things, Arithmetic, Physics and natural sciences, Geography, Geometry, History, Singing Classes, Drawing, Gymnastics and manual work for girls. One of the largest Escuelas Modelo in the country was built in Mineral de Pozos (Porfirio Diaz City). The project was financed by the city Hall, costing more than $25,054.18. The construction lasted four years and was led by architect Luis Long, during the mandate of the then Constitutional Governor Lic. Joaquin Obregón González. This building had two departments: one for boys and one for girls, therefore its
"E" shaped structure, which consisted of two courtyards, separated by a midblock building presumably intended for academic offices. In the construction of this Escuela Modelo, the architectural typologies typically of the time were distinguished in its design, which characterized the building with elements of the classical orders, such as:
- Cornices and friezes with denticles
- Pilasters with Corinthian chapiter, smooth shaft and base, pedestal and baseboard
- Use of triangular facade in access
- Window and door openings in ratio 1 to 2
- Quarry frames on doors and windows with wood enclosures
- Flat terraces
