This turbine came from a sawmill
located a few hundred yards
upstream of our mill
The saw mill was built ca 1886 by brothers James and Alexander Sutherland. Another brother Robert, built a blacksmith shop on the same property. The mill was later sold to the Ross Brothers.
The mill was powered by two turbines [we have evidence our mill also used two turbines].
In this photo, taken as part of an archeological survey done in 2012, you can see the two turbines sitting in the remains of a penstock [wooden box containing the turbines] on the bank of the brook.
In 2016 the smaller turbine washed out of the bank and downstream.
As its location in situ was now compromised we obtained permission from the province to move the turbine and display it here.
