General Leonidas Polk

Right Wing - Army of Tennessee
General Leonidas Polk.

September 20, 1863.

Forrest's Cavalry Corps - Brigadier General Nathan B. Forrest.
Breckinridge's Division - Major General John C. Breckinridge.
Walker's Reserve Corps - Major General William H.T. Walker.
Cleburne's Division - Major General Patrick R. Cleburne.
Cheatham's Division - Major General Benjamin F. Cheatham.

Breckinridge's Division attacked the left of the Union line in position around the northeast corner of the Kelly Field about 9:45 a.m., and after a severe engagement was repulsed with great loss. Walker's Corps was then brought forward. Cleburne's Division attacked the Union line east of the Kelly field at 10 o'clock and was repulsed with severe loss. Forrest's Cavalry moved forward when Breckinridge attacked, and captured the Union hospitals about Cloud's house and spring, but was driven back by Gordon Granger's troops, then on their way to Thomas, about 1 o'clock. A general attack on the right wing was ordered by General Bragg about the middle of the afternoon, but it was not delivered on this front until two Union divisions had withdrawn, and Johnson's and Baird's Divisions were about to withdraw. Upon being attacked Johnson and Baird withdrew to the forest west of the Kelly field.
The Confederates followed and bivouacked along the line of the Chattanooga and LaFayette road.
