—Bourbon District Historic Site 429 west —

Louisville architect Dennis Xavier Murphy inherited a thriving architectural firm from Henry Whitestone and solidified it as a preeminent de firm in the growing city. The firm was well-known for its design of the Galt House Hotel; the grandstand and spires of Churchill Downs; and an array of churches, schools, hospitals, and offices.
The firm began in 1853 under the ownership of Whitestone and is now one of the nation's oldest continually running architecture firms &— Luckett & Farley — with offices on South Third Street.

While engineers and master distillers were creating the best distilleries and warehouses, the bourbon businesses of Whiskey Row were also in need of a guiding architectural vision. Dotting the Main Street landscape, these distilleries turned to D.X. Murphy & Bro. to create the string of facades and office spaces that would help define Louisville's Whiskey Row.
Though their original office building no longer exists, the architects at D.X. Murphy & Bro. left a lasting presence in Louisville's distilling history: Bernheim Distillery, c. 1896; Combined Distillers of Kentucky, c. 1905-1906; Bonnie Brothers Distillery, c. 1903-1912; and The Phil. Hollenbach Company, c. 1889, home today to the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience at 528 West Main.
