Marin Headlands Golden Gate National ParkThe Marine Mammal Center is built on the site of the former Nike Missile Launch Area, SF 87L. In the 1950s, the army constructed two batteries in the Marin Headlands equipped with surface-to-are missiles, one near Fort Cronkhite and a second across the valley at Fort Barry. The missiles were called "Nike", after the Greek goddess of victory. They were in position for nearly 20 years, but were never launched.
