1st Brigade - Buell

—1st Division - Wood —

8th Battery, Indiana Light Artillery.
4 6 Pounders, 2 12 Pounder Howitzers.
Buell's Brigade, Wood's Division, Crittenden's Corps.
September 19, 1863.
Captain George Estep, Commanding (wounded slightly).
1st Lieutenant Jeremiah Voris.
1st Lieutenant Samuel Winsor.
2d Lieutenant William Stokes.
2d Lieutenant Charles B. Eldred.

About 3 p.m. the Battery moved from Lee and Gordon's Mill with Buell's Brigade at a double-quick, came into position on this ground in the center of the Brigade front line, in rear of troops of Davis' Division, and opened with shell. In a few moments the troops in front began falling back through the Battery in great confusion, followed closely by the enemy. The Battery retired with the Brigade to the woods on the west side of the road, leaving one gun which was soon recovered. The Battery with five pieces again opened from the woods in connection with others on the left. The enemy did not attempt to pursue over the open field. The Brigade again advanced followed by the Battery to its original position, where it opened on the enemy at 100 yards, but was soon compelled to fall back closely followed by the enemy.
Three pieces were abandoned, but were soon recovered by the advance of troops of Sheridan's Division. Captain Estep was slightly wounded,
but remained with the Battery. Casualties: 1 officer wounded; 1 man killed, 5 wounded and 2 missing; 1 limber; 1 caisson; 21 horses killed and disabled.
